Let’s talk about the best shorts for Disney World, because a lot of people are getting this wrong.
Every summer, thousands of visitors show up to the parks in jeans or denim shorts, which is baffling. Denim doesn’t breathe. It holds heat, it holds moisture, and in Orlando’s humidity it’ll feel like you’re wearing a damp cast by 10am.
The good news is that getting shorts right for a Disney World trip isn’t complicated. There are really just a few things to know.

What to Look for in a Park Day Short
- Material first. Moisture-wicking polyester, nylon blends, or performance fabrics are your best friend. They dry fast, breathe well, and won’t weigh you down when that afternoon storm hits. If you’re going cotton, make sure it’s a looser, more breathable cut. Not all cotton is created equal.
- Drawstring or elastic waist. This isn’t just about comfort on the walk from Tomorrowland to Fantasyland. Walt Disney World has some truly spectacular buffets, Sommerfest in EPCOT’s Germany pavilion comes to mind, and having a little give in your waistband is something you’ll quietly appreciate around your third plate. Trust me on this one.
- Zipper fly if you’re planning to drink around the World Showcase. Eleven countries, eleven drinks, one increasingly optimistic attitude. The combination of theme park crowds, long lines, and a few beers is not the time to be wrestling with a drawstring.
- Pockets. Deep ones. You’ll be carrying your phone and wallet all day. Your phone’s your Lightning Lane, your map, your dining reservation, and your camera. Anything that keeps it secure without needing a full bag is a win.
- Length. Somewhere between too short to sit on a ride without concern and so long they trap heat like capris. A 6-7 inch inseam hits the sweet spot for most people.
Men’s Picks
Best Overall: Faherty Essential Drawstring Short (~$98)
These are cotton, but a cotton-linen-modal blend with real breathability and a relaxed, roomy fit that makes a significant difference in the heat. The drawstring waist with just enough stretch is exactly what you want for a long park day. These are my go-to. They get more comfortable with every wash and surprisingly easy to get stains out, coming from the parent of a toddler, that’s not nothing. Available in desert olive, washed black, and several other colorways.
Best Mid-Range: Hurley H2O-Dri Breathe Walkshort (~$30)
Stylish and not too synthetic feeling. If you want something that looks like a real short rather than athletic wear, these are your move. The zip fly is a bonus if you’re doing the World Showcase.
Best Budget: Target All in Motion (~$20-25)
These look really nice, they’re comfortable, and the material handles a downpour or a soaking on Tiana’s Bayou Adventure without missing a beat. 30 minutes later you’re dry. For the price, they’re genuinely hard to beat.
Women’s Picks
Best Overall: Lululemon Track That High-Rise Lined Short 5″ (~$68)
My wife’s verdict: these are the only shorts where her thighs don’t cause chafing during long walks. After 10-12 miles through the parks that’s not a minor thing. The waistband doesn’t dig in, the 5″ inseam provides coverage without overheating, and the zippered side pocket keeps your phone secure. Her words: worth every penny.
Best Casual Option: Columbia Sandy River Short (~$35-45)
My wife’s personal favorite for pretty much everything in the warmer months, travel, camping, hiking, the beach, or any day it’s too hot to think straight. They come in a ton of colors and two inseam lengths and they’re genuinely versatile and super affordable. They’re mid-rise so she sizes up and wears them high waisted. Very casual but in the best possible way.
Best Budget: Target All in Motion (~$20-25)
Comfortable, fast drying, and they look great. Easy to grab at any Target before your trip, and there are plenty of those in Orlando if you forget.
A Note on Jorts
Just don’t. You already know why.
The Cotton Exception
Considering my top men’s pick is, in fact, cotton, it can definitely work in this weather too. If you’ve packed cotton shorts and there’s no time to course correct, follow the same rules as the shirt article: loose fit, light color, and pack a backup pair for after the afternoon storm. Central Florida doesn’t negotiate with denim, but it’ll at least be civil with a loose, light-colored cotton short.
The Bottom Line
Finding the best shorts for Disney World comes down to one thing: something that breathes. Leave the jeans at the hotel and pack a drawstring for the buffets. Your future self will thank you.
