The Flip Flop Question at Disney World Nobody Agrees On
Flip flops at Disney World seem like an obvious choice. It’s Florida, it’s hot, and the last thing you want is your feet trapped inside sneakers all day.
I used to think the same thing. I wore flip flops in the parks for years before eventually deciding my feet were much happier in sneakers. These days my Reefs stay at the resort.
My wife still wears flip flops in the parks on every trip.
So can you wear flip flops at Disney World? The answer depends entirely on who you ask in our house. You absolutely can, but the pair you’re wearing and the kind of day you have planned make a bigger difference than most people realize.
QUICK ANSWER
You can wear flip flops at Disney World, but a cheap flat pair isn’t going to survive a full park day. I switched to sneakers years ago. My wife comfortably wears supportive flip flops all day. The difference is what she’s wearing.

Why I Stopped Wearing Flip Flops in the Parks
Why I Stopped Wearing Flip Flops at Disney World
I didn’t quit flip flops because of one dramatic moment. The drawbacks just stopped being worth it.
1. Cheap Flip Flops Have Almost No Support
A Disney park day puts 10 miles or more on your feet. That’s a lot to ask from a thin piece of foam strapped to the bottom of your foot.
Cheap flat flip flops give you almost no cushioning or arch support. After hours on Disney’s concrete, your feet will let you know about it. Supportive flip flops are a different conversation, but cheap ones are not worth the risk.
2. Sunburned Feet Are a Special Kind of Miserable
Nobody remembers to put sunscreen on their feet.
The tops of your feet spend hours exposed to the Florida sun while you’re focused on everything else. Then you spend the next several days sliding those burned feet back into shoes.
Our sunscreen guide covers what we actually use for long park days. If you’re wearing flip flops, add the tops of your feet to the list.
Socks would solve this particular problem, but you’re not seriously thinking about wearing socks with sandals, are you?
Are you?!
3. The Old Navy Incident
You’d think an open shoe would handle Florida rain just fine.
During an afternoon storm in EPCOT’s World Showcase, I found out otherwise. I was wearing a pair of Old Navy flip flops when my foot went flying on the wet pavement, the strap snapped clean off, and I spent the rest of the evening doing an impromptu MacGyver repair job just to limp back to the car.
Wet flip flops can get surprisingly slippery, especially cheap pairs with smooth soles. And walking barefoot through Walt Disney World is a hard no, especially once the rain stops and the pavement starts heating back up.
4. Your Feet Are Completely Exposed
In a busy queue or packed World Showcase, someone is eventually going to step on your foot. In a sneaker that’s annoying. In a flip flop there’s nothing between their shoe and your toes.
It’s not the biggest reason to choose sneakers, but you’ll think about it the first time a stroller wheel comes suspiciously close to your foot.
When Flip Flops at Disney World Make Sense
I still bring flip flops on every Disney trip. I wear my Reefs around the resort, to the pool, and for relaxed days that don’t involve walking across Magic Kingdom for ten hours.
A resort day and a full park day put completely different demands on your feet. The pair that’s perfectly comfortable walking from your room to the pool might be miserable after hours of pavement.
So the question isn’t really whether you’re allowed to wear flip flops at Disney World. You absolutely can.
The better question is whether your flip flops and your feet are ready for the day you have planned.
The Best Flip Flops at Disney World
These are the pairs that have actually stuck around in our family and what we use them for.
Best Men’s Option: Reef Cushion Phantom 2.0 (~$50)
I’ve had my Reef Cushion Phantoms for about four years, and I still wear them constantly.
They have a thick cushioned footbed and considerably more support than the cheap flip flops I used to wear. The footbed has also molded to my feet over time, and they’re more comfortable now than when I bought them.
I don’t use them for full park days. They’re what I grab for walking around the resort, heading to the pool, or giving my feet a break from sneakers after a day in the parks.
Best Women’s Option: OluKai Hoopio Hui (~$90)
My wife spent years trying different flip flops for Disney before settling on the OluKai Ho’opio Hui. These are the pair she actually wears for full park days.
The contoured footbed gives her enough support to spend the day walking around the parks without switching to sneakers, and she continues to choose them trip after trip.
That’s why these are our recommendation for someone who genuinely prefers flip flops in the parks. They’ve actually been tested there repeatedly, rather than just feeling comfortable during a walk around the neighborhood.
If you want to try them before buying, there’s an OluKai store at Disney Springs.
And while you’re there, you’re steps away from Gideon’s Bakehouse. Go after dark and get the Dark Coffee Cake cookie. It’s hands down the best cookie I’ve ever had.
You can thank me later.
Pool and Casual Dinners: Havaianas (Women ~$26)
My wife loves Havaianas for pool days and casual dinners. They come in a ridiculous variety of styles, but she doesn’t use them for park days like she does the OluKais.
There’s also a Havaianas store at Disney Springs if you want to try them while you’re there.
Break Them In Before Disney
Disney World isn’t the place to discover whether a new pair of flip flops rubs your feet the wrong way.
Wear them before your trip. Walk around in them. Make sure the straps don’t rub and your feet actually tolerate them for more than twenty minutes.
A brand new pair straight out of the box is a great way to discover a blister problem six miles from your hotel.
The Bottom Line
Can you wear flip flops at Disney World? Absolutely.
For a full park day, I prefer a comfortable pair of walking shoes. If you prefer flip flops, wear a supportive pair you already know your feet can handle for hours at a time.
Whatever you choose, Disney World isn’t the place to find out your shoes were a mistake.
